So...

So... that my prelim stuff finished i guess, that was fun! but now onto the hard stuff, well i say that, i will probably enjoy it so it wont be too taxing. If im honest the prelim stuff was a lot more helpful than i thought it would be, i can imagine how my music magazine would look if i attempted it without the lesson we spent on photo shop, it would have been absolutely vile, ugly and plain rubbish. So im really glad we've done it!

Prelim photo thoughts (contents page)

I found the photos part quite difficult as i'm finding it quite hard to figure out the layers part of photoshop. It confuses me because as I said in my last post I dont really know much about photo shop so I will get Karina to go through it with me so I'll be able to successfully put in pictures to my actual music magazine without running into any problems.

Prelim text thoughts (contents page)

This is the text part of my contents page, i learned how to do text on photoshop which I know is going to be very useful, i feel as if photoshop and I are getting along a little better know as i'm beginning to understand its intricacies. I've also ways been a bit of a technophobe when it comes to photo shop as we used it in secondary school and I never got the hang of it but now Karina and Pete have taken us through it properly i'm learning a lot more about it and actually enjoying using as whereas before it was just a pain.

Finished Prelim Contents Page

This is a screen shot of my finished prelim task contents page, and i'm pretty please about it to be honest! I think it looks pretty professional in the way it's set out its not all over the place and the colour scheme even though it's not the ones I wanted actually looks pretty sweet!

Typography of my prelim

I chose this typography as it stuck out on the page and i chose red because it went along with the Farnham college colour scheme

This will work!

I've been thinking about who my magazine may appeal too, and couldn't think of a market except for maybe a small niche, but then i thought about the ballads and they cover many different genres, so i think that will be a really good thing to do because i will attract people from all different genres and maybe introduce them to other ballads with this magazine.

contents page analysis 1

Prelim title

So this is it... my title! i really like the name of it because i think it states it's purpose and target audience pretty well! I like the difference in typography between the mast head and tag line because i think it looks really cool and the title hold all the impact and then the tagline is softer to make college life seem a little easier. well thats what it seems like in my head...

Prelim cover

the first picture is of my cover is the initial typography and title and tag line,  i really like the font as it stands out to a crowd and stands strong on the page and doesn't get lost into the back ground.

My second picture of my cover photo is the finished object. i changed the colour of the typography to farnham colour (red) to make it look a tad more Farnham college-y. i still need to consider the colour of the typography as this is not very clear and it blends in with the models outfits and the background.

Mood board one - Pose!

This is my pose mood board - i chose deep emotion filled pictures as emotion is the main thing i wish to convey in my models pose.

Mood board two - design

This is what i want my model to be wearing

Textual cover analysis 5! - The Beatles

The price on the front of the cover immediately connotes to the audience who the magazine is targeted toward, the amount the magazine costs provides a basis to who the magazine is being targeted for as if the price is high, it is clearly not aimed toward people of a lower socio-economic status as they wouldn't be able to afford it. This magazine cost £3.79 so is aimed toward the lower bracket of people.

Again, the mast head is red which seems to be typical of all Rolling Stones magazines, which connotes to the audience that this is an established brand. The red is a colour of passion and power, which could connote the brands passion about music, and could also connote the power the brand has in the music industry, as it is a very highly recommended music magazine.

The black and white photo connotes to a consumer the age of the band. The Beatles are an older band of the 80's so by putting it in black and white they are showing this. It also connotes class and superiority. The Beatles were a very superior band to the others in their era, their pose also shows this, a low angle photo of them looking down toward the camera also connotes that they are higher up than everyone else. This would signify to a consumer that their music is greater than other people which may interest them in listening to it more.

The plug of this cover 'Why the Beatles broke up' connotes who the magazine is aimed for again. It would appeal to an older generation of people that listened to them, and also it could entice people of this era that enjoy the Beatles music as people in the 80's did, or people that enjoy reading about The Beatles.

Their attire connotes the era in which the Beatles were popular as they are wearing clothing from the 80's. This connotes to the audience the genre and sound of the music as the clothing is soft and free, it gives an audience an inkling into the fact that their music was also soft and free, the 80's was a time for peace and love and their clothing shows this.

Textual cover analysis 4! John Eliot Gardiner

The gramophone cover is a really good example of the level of splender and power i want on my cover.

The grey cloudy background is a signifier in this cover. What it connotes to an audience is a possible pathetic fallacy of Gardiner's story. The grey and black tones make this background look foreboding and powerful therefore making the cover model seem more powerful and of a higher status. He doesn't look like someone you'd mess with.

This also reflects nicely his music as Gardiner is a classical composer his musical is often extremely powerful and emotive, this cover conveys that to an audience by the use of colour and pose that this is a powerful image so it gives the consumer an insight into his music!

The way John Eliot Gardiner's hands are placed signify to me that he is a man of responsibility and that is fairly astute. The way his fingers are crossing one another connote to the audience that he is maintaing a posture that is not to be reckoned with, he looks almost wizard like with the sleeves of his robes. This gives the cover again a very supreme feeling.

His eyes looking off toward the distance could connote to the consumer that he is leading people in some way, he appears to be directing them with his eyes. The power in his eyes show us that he is passionate about what it is he is looking at, by looking away from the camera he is leaving an air of mystery around what he is looking at, and therefore leaving an air of mystery around himself!

The use of language on the cover is more suited to a male demographic as is the cover photo. The use of powerful wording such as "Revolution" would appear more directly to older target audience, most of whom would be predominantly male.

Textual cover analysis 3 - Adele's rolling stones cover

Adeles hair in this photo connotes to an audience that she has a wild unkempt un-pristine side to her, perhaps showing her natural side as apposed the the adele she presents in her music which is often quite soulful and full of emotion. The fact that her hair is messy signifies that she is letting her self go with her music and letting her facade come down and just go with the music. It could also link to the fact that this is the 'Best of Rock 2011' and typically rockers are not pristine.

The red mast head signifies that it should stand out as there is nothing else red on the page it is designed to stand out, which nicely links into the 'rock' theme of the cover, as rock music was intended to shock people and to stand out in a crowd, which this mast head signifies purely by the fact that is stands out clearly. This could also be this way to promote the brand name, as it is the second thing that hits you on the page, only seconded by the picture of Adele.

The typography on the word 'Adele' connotes to an audience class and elegance, which is the epitome of adeles music. The different sizes of sides on this font make it appear very elegant and stand out nicely. This signifies Adeles musical persona and her personality to the audience by representing her name in such a feminine and classy font.

The white typography typically conveys innocence and purity which bodes well with the image, as adeles full parted lips and blue eyes make her appear almost angelic. It signifies to the audience the emotion of sadness, which links with the title 'heartbreak superstar'. The sadness in adeles eyes connotes to the audience her history by making them see that she is sad you feel empathy and interest toward her situation.

The light blue background also connotes sadness to the consumer as blue is typically the colour that represents sadness. It is also a primary colour which people have grown up with all their lives and are scientifically proven to be more attracted to. It could also represent the mood of the cover, the fact that it's a baby blue softens the cover and makes it seem more emotional to an audience than harsh.

Textual cover analysis 2! Manson Heron

The acoustic cover model's clothing is this picture connote to me that he is of a high calibre in the music world because the colour black represents to an audience class, sophistication and success and when a man is wearing black he is dressed to impress and is very clean cut.

His glasses are a symbolic sign which connote to me again intelligence and sophistication, they do this as I've learned through social networking and TV and film that when people wear glasses they depicted as 'brainiacs' or men and women of high intelligence or they wear them to show themselves at a higher status above others.

Martin Taylor's slicked back hair is a signifier. It denotes to the audience once again that he is a man of class and emotion. His hair makes the consumer view him as a clean cut gentleman and also gives you a little insight to how his music may sound, you can tell it's mainly for adults by the way he looks because he looks so sleek and pristine.

The typography and colour of the typography on the cover connotes the 'clean cut' message further. By using whites it looks tidy, innocent and also represents to the consumer the genre of music very well as acoustic music is stripped back, bare emotions which is reflected in the white typography.

The orangey/brown typography colour represents the guitar which is again representing the music, as the typography is the same colour as the guitar it makes it pop from the page and keeps it all in a simple colour scheme further more representing the simplicity of the music and in more depth i believe it represents the emotion of most acoustic music, as it is usually very powerful and heart felt, where the musicians lay their emotions bare, like the colour scheme.

I'd would say the demographic for this certain issue would be leaning more toward males as i believe the cover leans more toward the male gender because of the fact its a fairly manly cover.  This is further explored with the language used in one of the sub-headings "conquer" is a very powerful masculine font which a male demographic would appreciate more than a female demographic.

Textual cover analysis 1! Robert Downey jr.

The denotation of Robert Downey juniors' eyes is the other mans reflection in them. the connotation of this makes an audience think that he is maybe having a stand of or a confrontation with this man. Also the was he is so intently look at them could also show how he is trying to non-verbally intimidate him, or maintain eye contact with this mystery man.

His slightly parted mouth is a singnifier. What this signifies to me is that maybe he is about to start talking to this man we looked at in my last point. His lips look fairly taught so the consumer may believe that he is angry and like he is about to verbally attack the man in his eye reflection. the sign of Robert Downey juniors face as a whole shows he is angry and perhaps ready to fight for something or perhaps against someone.

The violence theme is further carried on with his openly zipped hoodie which exposes his hairy chest. To an audience this would evoke being a true 'man',  the hair connotates maybe a sense of wildness about him. it represents danger.

The idea of coldness is continued through out the colour scheme by the use of cold greys, blacks and whites. The grey connotes to the consumer metal, which evokes thoughts of crow bars, bats and other harmful metal objects. Which I can imagine the Downey Junior represented in the picture using in his confrontation with the man in his eyes. Black and white are both very stark colours much in contrast to the orange Downey Junior is wearing which connotes that he should stand out. He is someone to fear.

The language used in the texts is fairly violent in all of the subheadings for example "Blow it" "Every day massacre" and "to hell and back" which again signifies the feeling of anger and violence which is explored throughout the cover. This continued use of violent language heightens the impact of this front cover as the words will stand out to a reader that glances at the cover.

Downey Juinors stubble is a symbolic symbol of a tough man. I've learned through TV and books that violent  and dangerous men and criminals often have stubble so the fact he is depicted with this sign portrays him as a dangerous man and someone whom should be taken seriously and not messed around.
